Miami Heat

Paul Laurence Dunbar Elementary School is proud to house the first Heat Academy in Miami-Dade County. The after-school program is the initiative of the Miami Heat basketball president. The purpose of the project is to provide additional supplementary time for 100 students in the areas of mathematics and reading.

The four teachers and four paraprofessionals work five days a week for two hours a day with the students. The children enjoy the theme driven activities and the guess presenters which are provided by the Miami Heat organization.

As a result of this initiative the students attendance and their progress in the basic areas have improved

Little Liberty 

Overtown Youth Center 

The Overtown Youth Center was founded in January 2003 by real estate developer Martin Margulies and NBA All-Star player Alonzo Mourning. It offers a full range of services, including educational enrichment, recreational activities, mentoring, literacy initiatives, performing arts, prevention and life skills training for at-risk youth.
